What we can't help with

We get this question a lot, so we want to be upfront: we cannot give individualized financial advice. We're not licensed financial advisors, and even if we were, advising someone on their specific debt situation requires understanding their full financial picture — income, expenses, credit history, goals — which we don't have access to.

If you need personalized advice, we'd recommend two routes. For free guidance, the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) offers nonprofit credit counseling sessions at low or no cost. For paid advice, a fee-only Certified Financial Planner can provide objective, fiduciary guidance — you can find one through the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors.

A note about response time

We're a small editorial team and we read every email personally. Most messages get a response within 2–3 business days. Partnership and press inquiries usually move faster (1–2 days). Reader questions sometimes take a bit longer, especially if they require us to dig into specific calculations or research. Thank you for your patience.

One last thing: if you're emailing about a specific essay or calculator, please mention which one in the subject line. It helps us route the email to the right person and respond more accurately.
